BUILDING work has got under way on the new Midlothian Community Hospital.

Construction work started earlier this month and the hospital, near Bonnyrigg, is due for completion in 2010.

The new community hospital will provide 88 beds, a day hospital for the elderly with mental health problems, a dedicated physiotherapy service and child health clinics.

Dr Charles Winstanley, chair of NHS Lothian, said: "This significant development shows our commitment to providing high quality healthcare services."
