Hospital gets ready to mark its bicentenary
A CITY hospital is preparing to launch bicentenary celebrations this year which will last until 2013.
The foundation stones of the Royal Edinburgh psychiatric hospital in Morningside were laid in 1809 and it opened in 1813.
NHS Lothian has now begun planning a series of events to mark the anniversary.
The milestone comes at a time of further change for the hospital – the health board is currently studying a range of options, including moving some units to the ERI or the Western, and creating a new purpose-built section on the current site.
Tim Montgomery, director of operations at the hospital, said: "In the run-up to the re-provision of the hospital, views will be sought from people taking part in the bicentenary celebrations which will help influence the design and philosophy of the new building.
"In the meantime we are trying to improve both the physical environment and the experience of patients, staff and visitors to the hospital."
