History lesson

Have your say

YOUR picture of the 11 SNP MPs elected in 1974 (2 May) reminded me of some of the immediate effects.

All the other political parties quickly rebranded themselves to include “Scotland” or “Scottish” in their titles and almost fell over each other to establish their Scottish credentials. Even the notoriously parochial London press, whose members always arrogantly described themselves as “the national newspapers”, suddenly started to produce Scottish editions.

They realised that this provided a wonderful opportunity to placate their restless Scottish readers and simultaneously continue their London-centred views in the English editions. It is always fascinating to see how often history repeats itself.
