Historic Scotland say no to £200,000 Olympic logo on Edinburgh Castle

How olympic rings could look on the Castle at Hogmanay.

HISTORIC Scotland has said it will not allow a giant Olympic Rings logo to be displayed on the side of Edinburgh Castle.

The announcement followed a campaign by the Evening News to stop the proposal, which would have seen the 30ft tall and 60ft wide rings placed fixed to the Castle ramparts from Hogmanay, and remain for up to nine months.

There had been widespread opposition to the proposal - which would cost taxpayers an estimated £200,000 - since it was first announced, but while the London 2012 organising committee had insisted Historic Scotland agreed to the plans, the heritage body today said it would not allow the rings to be placed on the Castle.

A spokesman for the body said: “Historic Scotland has taken the decision not to permit the Olympic Rings to be displayed on the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle.

“Following careful consideration it is clear that the proposal would not be suitable for the successful operation of Scotland’s most popular heritage attraction.

“It may well be that there are other more suitable sites in Edinburgh, and the Scottish Government and agencies will work with LOCOG and The City Edinburgh of Council to do what we can to assist with the consideration of alternatives.

“We fully support the Olympic Games and we look forward to hosting the Speed of Light event on Arthurs Seat to combine visual art with sporting endeavour and a number of our sites are on the Olympic Torch Relay route, including Edinburgh.”

It is now expected that the organising committee will look for an alternative venue in the Capital.

A big well done to Historic Scotland. Great news that they have told the London Olympic mob to ram their rings right up their ring! Plus, it has the added bonus of getting on the unionist's thrupny bits....big time :D It's another great day to be a real Scot and the St Andrews Unionist student outrage was brilliant inaw!

#45 Any fool knows that Olympic Games are awarded to Cities not Countries. If they are UK games please list the number of events in Scotland far less Edinburgh. Take your time as there are hundreds of events.

Much ado about nothing;parish pump Parochalism symbol of petty local dimmension. Edinburgh claims to being an International iconic city;U.K. was awarded "The Olympics";the 5 rings represent a "Global" badge of honour ;positioning of the rings as depicted will resonate around the world . Investing in such a once in a life time opporunity will resonate with all who who are disposed to be forward looking ,creative ,cheerfull, . Bringing some added colour ,some hope for many that despite the "doom and gloom"nae -saers" of many herewith commentators the binning of the "Olympic Rings " project would be a mistake.

Beware - they'll be after the Forth Bridge next - it's the other 'world famous' landmark in the area. If that fails, they'll dredge Loch Ness for a monster tatoo...

Loopy-Labour British Nationalist League have failed to force Edinburgh to advertise London as a tourist destination three days after this paper claimed tourist would desert Edinburgh. Absolutely Loopy despite Loops being banned. Lets also get rid of Loopy-Labour British Defence League.

Rember it was the LibDems who voted to have the Rings on the castle, such as councillor Lowrie & Peacock So when it comes to the elections remember these names because they are not fit for purpose, they where prepared to sell out the people Edinburgh & Scotland to there bed mates south of the border.
