Heroin can treat addicts says doctor
A LEADING former GP has called for trials which would prescribe heroin to drug addicts.
Lothians MSP Dr Ian McKee said the idea was worth looking at after a similar scheme in England found that even the most indisciplined junkies could be treated successfully.
He said it could lead to a long-term decrease in crime caused by heroin addiction, while addicts would be able to contribute to society again.
His views came as a study was published recommending the Scottish Government examines the possibility.
"The results are very encouraging, considering the fact that it was dealing with refractory heroin addicts, the most difficult people to help in conventional treatment programmes," he said.
"It's time to further this research in Scotland and build on it with new studies, especially with regard to long-term benefits."
