Heritage bosses say archive centre a step closer
HERITAGE chiefs have today insisted progress is being made on a new home for Scotland's heritage archives, which is set to be built in the Capital.
The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland was given 12 million towards a purpose-built centre, which will contain thousands of ancient documents and historical records to replace its base in the south of the city in 2004.
But a new site for the collections – along with works from the National Museums of Scotland, the National Archives of Scotland and the National Library – was only found in Granton last year.
The Royal Commission today said a master planning project to flesh out the new archive was under way.
A spokeswoman for the Royal Commission said: "A site at Granton was acquired in September 2007 with a view to handling long-term storage issues for the National Collections, including RCAHMS, and the full development potential of the site is currently under consideration."
