Herald staff strike over compulsory redundancies
JOURNALISTS at the Herald in Glasgow yesterday went on strike over compulsory redundancies.
Staff at the Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times joined the walk-out and union members on the Sunday paper are refusing to work today.
The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) said more than 200 people joined the action and a further one-day strike has been called for Wednesday.
The dispute has arisen over budget cuts and most recently centred on four members of staff at the Evening Times who face redundancy. Management claim internal reshuffles mean only one job is at stake, a claim disputed by unions.
NUJ organiser Paul Holleran said: "Newsquest [the owners] management questioned support for the strike, but it has been overwhelming."
Tim Blott, managing director of the Herald group, said: "We deeply regret the decision of the NUJ to continue its proposed strike."
