Scottish Election 2021 results: How close are the SNP to a majority right now?

The SNP won 63 out of 129 seats in the Scottish Parliament elections in 2016 – just two seats shy of an overall majority of 65.

Achieving an overall majority in this year’s Scottish Parliament would allow the SNP to wield more power in Holyrood, with a majority in parliamentary committees and less opposition to delivering its agenda over the next five years.

While regional results have yet to be declared, readers can keep track of the SNP’s progress in the constituency seats announced so far and see how close they are to achieving this overall majority by using our Majority Tracker graphic.

Every time a seat is declared, our Tracker will be updated to show how many seats each party has attained so far, with each party extending their share in the graphic when they win a seat.

From here, readers can keep an eye on the distribution of Holyrood’s 129 seats and track the SNP’s progress toward that 50 per cent threshold mark, representing 65 seats.

As more results come in, the Tracker will also show how many seats a party has lost or gained following the 2016 election.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon described achieving a majority on Friday as a “long shot”, but stressed it was not impossible.
