We should welcome a play that questions the “establishment” view of Major-General Hector MacDonald, or “Fighting Mac” (your report, 19 January).
He remained a hero to many in spite of the allegations against him.
In particular, James Scott Skinner composed a beautiful and memorable fiddle tune, Hector The Hero, within a week of Hector’s death in March 1903.
The tune also goes well on bagpipe, on which I sometimes play it. Hector’s alleged suicide saved the British establishment of the time from a controversial trial. There are still those who believe or suspect that he was innocent of the charges against him and that his death was not suicide.
