Health chiefs chart rise in complaints

THE number of formal complaints made against NHS Lothian by patients and relatives has risen by 12 per cent in the past three months.

The surge has been blamed on telephone access problems at the new Chalmers sexual health centre in Lauriston and increased waiting times for orthopaedic outpatient appointments, which has been due to the retirement of a consultant.

Health board bosses also said it was now far easier to register a formal grievance through the website.

The 252 complaints is the highest since April last year, but it still represents a tiny fraction of patients who are actually treated by the organisation.

Medical director Dr David Farquharson said that a great many compliments were also received.

He added: "Clinical treatment, staff attitude and behaviour, waiting times and environment remain in the top four subjects of complaints."
