Virus may be key to cancer

A CHICKEN virus could shed new light on how human cancers develop, scientists have claimed.

Researchers at the Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh and the Institute for Animal Health said their work on Marek’s disease could also make it possible to breed birds with greater resistance to the disease.

Scientists have identified a gene – IRG1 – that makes chickens more susceptible to the disease.

The gene is thought to cause cells to die, which can in turn lead to diseases including cancer.

The research, published in the Journal of Virology, also found the Marek’s disease virus switches off genes with anti- tumour mechanisms.
