UK to buy £1m of condoms to fight Aids in South Africa
BRITAIN is buying £1 million worth of condoms for South Africa in an effort to tackle the country's HIV and Aids problem, it was announced yesterday.
With up to 1,000 Aids-related deaths and 1,500 new HIV infections a day, South Africa is the world's worst-affected country.
And officials there have called for a boost in contraceptive supplies to deal with the influx of visitors for the football World Cup this summer.
The cash was announced by international development minister Gareth Thomas at a summit in London called to address concerns over slow progress in tackling the epidemic.
African nations, donors and the drugs industry were gathered by the government in an attempt to get a target of universal access to prevention and care by 2015 "back on track". Britain's contribution will pay for 42 million condoms.
