Single room provision 'still a priority' in new hospitals
SINGLE room provision for new-build hospitals will continue to be a priority, the health secretary has said.
As part of the NHS Lothian annual review this week, Nicola Sturgeon said that en-suite single rooms would be most patients' first choice for care.
Her defence of the policy came after a member of the audience said being confined in a non-ward setting could be detrimental.
He told the City Chambers meeting: "I was in for eight weeks and it was like a prison. You would hardly have contact with anyone."
But Ms Sturgeon, who had earlier visited an example single room for the new Royal Victoria Hospital, said: "I have seen what is intended at the Royal Victoria and that accommodation is really first class.
"In terms of dignity and care, for most patients, it is the preferred option."
