Scientists claim to be close to finding a cure for leukaemia
IRISH medical researchers claimed yesterday they were tantalisingly close to a cure for leukaemia after encouraging results from tests on a new drug.
Experts redesigned the current No 1 treatment before testing began on 18 patients suffering from the life-threatening blood and bone marrow cancer in Ireland.
Doctors believe they may be able to use the process as a blueprint for making other cancer drugs more effective.
Professor Frank Giles, an Irish doctor based at the University of Texas in the US, said researchers around the world would view the study as a very significant step towards a cure for chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML).
He said: "This is an important breakthrough in terms of defining a new front-line CML therapy and it has occurred because of Irish medical leadership and collaboration."
