Nurses need guidance on suicide issues

CLEAR guidance is needed for nurses on the matter of assisted suicide, the city's main nursing union has said.

Speaking after the Royal College of Nursing switched its stance on the issue from against to a neutral standpoint, the director of the RCN in Scotland said it must develop extensive guidance.

The RCN said it had changed its view after consulting with members and working with the likes of Lothians MSP Margo MacDonald, who has long called for a national debate on the subject.

RCN's director in the city, Theresa Fyffe, said: "There is a clear need for guidance on the legal, ethical, regulatory and clinical issues around assisted suicide, so the RCN is now going to develop detailed guidance."
