Number of reported flu sufferers in Scotland falls

THE number of people seeing a doctor with flu-like symptoms in Scotland fell last week, despite warnings about rising cases of the H1N1 virus in the weeks ahead.

Figures from Health Protection Scotland yesterday showed there were 15 GP consultations for flu symptoms per 100,000 people.

This compared to 27 the previous week and 32 the week before. The figures come after Westminster Health Secretary Andy Burnham last week warned that 100,000 people a day could be diagnosed with swine flu by the end of August – 10,000 of them in Scotland.

Scotland has stopped lab testing all suspected cases of swine flu. It will now start reporting rates of people seeing their doctor with flu symptoms alongside the percentage confirmed with H1N1 through random testing.

Before the switch, 1,377 lab confirmed cases of swine flu were reported. Yesterday, the Scottish Government said two patients in Scotland with H1N1 were in intensive care.
