Mercy team on Hurricane Dean alert
CITY charity Mercy Corps is to send relief to victims of Hurricane Dean, which has left a trail of destruction across Mexico and the Caribbean.
The organisation, whose European headquarters are on Claremont Crescent, is teaming up with US-based Partners of the Americas for the operation.
"We've seen the incredible needs in the immediate aftermath of such a strong hurricane," said executive director Mervyn Lee.
"We hope for the best but plan for the worst, so we will work closely with Partners of the Americas to meet immediate needs as they arise."
Mercy Corps is already working to provide relief following last week's 7.9-magnitude earthquake in Peru.
They are distributing water purification tablets, and looking to provide medicines, tents, tools, first-aid kits and other essential items.
Donations can be made via the Mercy Corps website at www.mercycorps.org.uk.
