Medics urged to watch out for at-risk children

DOCTORS and nurses are to receive guidance on spotting signs of maltreatment in children, which could increase the number referred to social services, it has been announced.

The guidance will help GPs and other health workers identify children at risk of physical or sexual abuse, but also those being emotionally harmed or neglected.

One in ten children suffers some form of abuse at the hands of their carers, says the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, which published the document. It urged health workers to "listen to" and "observe" children, taking in their appearance and behaviour, and interaction between parent and child.

Signs of neglect are said to include a child being dressed in the wrong sized clothes or ones that do not match the weather, being dirty or smelly over a period of time, or suffering persistent infestations such as scabies or head lice.
