Margo MacDonald 'shocked' at church attack on suicide bill

INDEPENDENT MSP Margo MacDonald has hit back at claims by a Catholic Church spokesman that her assisted dying bill is a cheaper alternative to medical care.

Ms MacDonald said she was "shocked and disappointed", adding: "Cost has nothing to do with it. It's very wicked of him to say so."

John Deighan, parliamentary officer for the Archdiocese of Glasgow, said in a radio interview that the End Of Life Choices Bill is "being promoted as something which is cheaper than care".

Ms MacDonald, who has Parkinson's disease, is proposing the legislation to ensure a "peaceful and dignified death" for people with similar conditions.

Ms MacDonald also said that the revelations by BBC presenter Ray Gosling that he carried out a mercy killing on a former lover who had Aids were precisely why her bill was so relevant. She said: "A pillow over the face is not dignified or peaceful, that's why I want a medically-assisted death at your own request."
