Island braces itself for £5m dental centre
A NEW "teach and treat" centre is to be built in the Western Isles to improve dental facilities in the area.
A site adjacent to the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway has been earmarked for the 5 million centre, although no final decision has yet been taken. It will replace the Bayhead Dental Practice, which is no longer considered fit for purpose.
The new facility will treat dental patients and be a base for undergraduate training.
If approved, building could start early next year and the centre could open in 2011.
A 1.35 million allocation from the Scottish Government will be used, along with health board funds. NHS Education for Scotland has also agreed to provide 25,000 in grant aid.
