Fireflies may be infertility key

JELLYFISH and fireflies may hold the key to tackling the problem of infertility, scientists believe.

Genes taken from the creatures are shedding light on possible causes of infertility as well as auto-immune diseases in humans, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

Scientists from the Universities of Edinburgh, Manchester and Liverpool are using the luminescent and florescent genes to illuminate cells that produce the hormone prolactin, which is crucial in ensuring supplies of breast milk but can also be overproduced by some pituitary tumours, causing infertility.
