Fertility watchdog calls for widening of egg donor pool
WOMEN who are not undergoing fertility treatment may now be allowed to donate eggs purely for medical research, it is reported today.
Until now, only women undergoing IVF or gynaecological treatment have been permitted to donate their eggs for stem cell research due to the health risks involved in the procedure.
But the Government's fertility watchdog, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), is now recommending that scientists recruit donors who are not having medical treatment.
The HFEA's ruling body is due to meet tomorrow to decide whether or not to approve the proposal.
It is hoped that widening the pool of donor women would help address the shortage of eggs available for therapeutic cloning and boost research into treatments for diseases such as Parkinson's and diabetes.
