Diabetes risk for thousands

MORE than half a million people in the UK could have undiagnosed diabetes or be at risk of developing the condition, researchers said yesterday.

A survey of the blood-test records of more than 3.6 million patients revealed thousands of cases of probable diabetes. Across the UK, this could add up to 60,000 extra patients living with the illness, which can have devastating effects on health, a team led by Dr Tim Holt, of Warwick University, said.

Hundreds of thousands of others showed evidence of potentially developing diabetes in the future.

The study, published in the British Journal of General Practice, involved analysing the electronic records of patients from 480 GP surgeries across the UK.
