Deprived men in suicide risk

Middle-aged men from disadvantaged backgrounds are ten times more likely to commit suicide because they have lost their masculine pride and identity, according to a new report.

The report, commissioned by the Samaritans, found that on average about 3000 men aged between 30-40 from disadvantaged backgrounds take their own lives each year.

Stephen Platt, Samaritans trustee and Edinburgh University of health policy research professor, said: “We need to acknowledge that men are different to women and design services to meet their needs.”
