Couples who seek IVF will be warned of higher birth defect risk
COUPLES seeking IVF treatment will be warned that children born as a result may have a higher risk of birth defects, it emerged last night.
The Human Fertilisation and Embryology's Authority's updated guidance will refer to findings that test-tube babies could be up to 30 per cent more likely to suffer from certain health problems and genetic flaws.
The government's watchdog on fertility issues has amended its guidance so that parents can have information about studies raising concerns about IVF.
Scientists from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta found IVF babies suffered from higher rates of conditions such as heart valve defects, cleft lip and palate, and digestive system abnormalities.
Patients will have access to the HFEA advice next month on its website, www.hfea.gov.uk.
The HFEA will make clear most babies born by IVF are healthy and more research is needed on birth defect issues.
An HFEA spokesman said: "As with any medical procedure, it is important that patients understand what treatment involves and what the risks may be.
"Our code of practice says that clinicians must tell patients about the possible side-effects and risks of treatment, including any risks for the child.
"With new legislation being introduced later this year, HFEA is revising and updating the patient information it provides on its website.
"Anyone who has concerns about their treatment should discuss this with their doctor."
Richard Kennedy, of the British Fertility Society, said: "What we need to remember is the overall risks of an abnormality occurring is increased with IVF, but it is still a small risk."
