Chemical cancer link fears
A CHEMICAL found in some plastic food and drink packaging, including baby bottles, may be linked to the early onset of puberty, and prostate and breast cancer, the US government said last night.
Based on draft findings by the National Toxicology Program (NTP), senior congressional Democrats asked the Food and Drug Administration to reconsider its view that bisphenol A was safe to add to products for use by infants and children.
The chemical, also called BPA, is used in the manufacture of many baby bottles and the plastic lining of tins of infant formula.
The NTP findings expressed concern about babies and children being exposed to BPA "based on effects in the prostate gland, the mammary gland, and an earlier age for puberty in females".
