Call for government ban on social network booze adverts
SCOTLAND'S leading alcohol doctors are calling on the four UK governments to support a ban on the promotion of alcohol on social networking sites.
Research shows drinks companies were using new media channels in a way which contravenes the spirit of the advertising codes.
The study was undertaken by Dr Oona Brooks, from the Institute of Social Marketing at Stirling University on behalf of Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems.
Dr Brooks said that, on sites such as Facebook, leading UK alcohol brands were "using fictional characters to appeal to youth culture and masculinity", as well as suggesting that alcohol is "indispensable" and that it can "enhance sporting achievement".
