Booze behind intensive care

Alcohol problems contribute to a quarter of admissions to intensive care units in Scotland, according to a study.

The cost of treating those patients is estimated at £9 million a year, the Scottish Intensive Care Audit Group has said.

The figures emerged as it was revealed that the Scottish Government’s flagship policy to introduce a minimum price for alcohol will face a legal challenge from the drinks industry.

The Scotch Whisky Association is expected to reveal a package of measures today, including legal action, to thwart the government’s plans.
