Blood 'risk' in heart surgery
HEART surgery blood transfusions can double the risk of infection and increase the chances of dying in hospital almost fivefold, a study has shown.
Researchers in the United States who looked at almost 25,000 heart by-pass patients found strong evidence of infection from donor blood.
Transfusions were associated with a doubling of infections such as C difficile and a 4.7-fold higher risk of in-hospital death.
Ellen Mason, of the British Heart Foundation, said: "Clear conclusions about the risk can't be drawn because the study has limitations."
