BBC Scotland weathergirl Cat Cubie joins host of Scots picking a “special day” to raise money for breast cancer research

WEATHERGIRL Cat Cubie has launched a campaign which encourages people to spend a day fundraising for a breast cancer charity.

Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s One Day campaign asks people to choose their own “special day”, which could be a birthday or the date they or someone close to them was diagnosed with the disease, and mark it by raising cash for the charity.

Breakthrough is said to fund the only dedicated breast cancer research unit in Scotland, based at Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital.

It spends £2,200 a day working to find new and better treatments for the disease.

As well as the One Day campaign, the charity also launched a short film which features stories from people who have been touched by breast cancer, including comedian Susan Calman and former Gladiator Ali Paton (Siren).

BBC Scotland weathergirl Cubie said: “One day, I hope that breast cancer will be a treatable disease; as that one day could lead to so many more happy years.”

Sue Hunter, 39, a lawyer from Edinburgh, features in the film. Her One Day is April 29 last year, when she found a lump in her breast.

Ms Hunter was diagnosed with breast cancer soon after and went on to receive treatment at the Western General Hospital. She is now in remission.

Her wish is that there will be a day in the future when people that are diagnosed with breast cancer are not scared they are going to die.

She said: “The day of the royal wedding will always stick in my mind for very different reasons to many other people across the country.

“While everyone was celebrating, I was contemplating my future or possible lack of it. I was waiting to find out whether I had breast cancer and it was a very lonely and vulnerable time.

“It is only through more research, we can hope for a day that no-one fears that breast cancer is a death sentence.”
