AN AMBULANCE carrying a patient to hospital was involved in a five-vehicle smash on the A9 north of Inverness.

The patient was unharmed, while there was only one report of minor injuries to an occupant of one of the four cars involved.

The accident happened on a dual carriageway section of the Inverness to Thurso road around a quarter of a mile south of the Munlochy junction at about 5.50pm.

Tailbacks stretched several miles as the emergency services dealt with the crash.

The southbound carriageway was reopened at 7pm.

The patient in the ambulance was transferred to hospital by another ambulance.
