All Scots urged to give blood in 2009
EVERYONE over the age of 17 in Scotland has been urged to give blood at least once in 2009 in an effort to reverse a dramatic decline in donations.
New figures from the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service show Scotland has 30,000 fewer blood donors than a decade ago. In 1998 there were 208,000 donors in Scotland, but that figure has fallen to 179,000.
Dr Moira Carter, the national donor services manager, said yesterday: "We need everyone in Scotland who is over the age of 17 to make the commitment to come forward and give blood at least once in 2009. This will help reverse the donor base decline we are witnessing.
"The decline in donor numbers is very worrying. We need more donors to come forward to ensure that we can continue to support health care."
