21 new swine flu cases confirmed

THE number of confirmed cases of swine flu in Scotland has risen by 21, taking the total to 647.

The Scottish Government yesterday said all but one of the new cases were detected in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area. The other was reported by NHS Tayside.

Two probable cases are under investigation, both in NHS Lothian. One is travel-related.

Four people with confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus are being treated in hospital in Scotland. NHS Lanarkshire also confirmed that two pupils at St Helen's Primary School in Condorrat, Cumbernauld were positive cases. However, following a risk assessment by public health officials, it has been decided that the school will remain open.

In addition, following confirmation of a positive case at Rhu Primary School in Argyll, all children in a primary five class were issued with Tamiflu tablets as a precaution.

Meanwhile, the Philippines announced its first death from the virus yesterday.

The 48-year-old woman, who died officially from heart failure, is the second in the Asia-Pacific region linked to swine flu, after a man in Australia died on Friday.
