Health chiefs refuse to rush hospital plans

PLANS for the re-provision of the city's mental health hospital won't be rushed, health chiefs have said.

The debate over the future of the Royal Edinburgh has rumbled on for years with opinions split over whether it should stay in Morningside or move to a new location either beside the ERI or the Western – or be split between locations.

The Patient Council is keen for the hospital to remain in an area where it has built up excellent community links, though the land at Morningside is probably NHS Lothian's most valuable estate.

Jackie Sansbury, director of strategic planning and modernisation at the health board, who is in charge of the scheme, said: "We have an opportunity to completely rethink how we care for people with mental health issues and it's important that we don't rush things, and that we fully consider and involve as many people and relevant organisations as possible.

"It is very important that we take the time required to get this right."
