Logan Steele’s justified complaint against poisoning predatory species which prey on ground nesting birds is off the mark when he includes “hares” in his gamekeeper’s list of
vermin (Letters, 23 December).

Gamekeepers are as anxious to preserve our rapidly diminishing stocks of brown and blue hares
as they are to preserve ground nesting waders, curlews, peewits, redshanks and waterfowl of all sorts.

If predatory species like the crow family and foxes are awarded a blanket protection, often for sentimental rather than practical reasons, then all our vanishing ground nesting birds will disappear sooner than predicted – and that day is not far distant.
