UN HELICOPTERS last night reached the remote site of a plane crash that killed 11 peacekeepers when a surveillance flight slammed into a mountain in eastern Haiti.
The victims, Uruguayan and Jordanian troops serving with the UN peacekeeping force, all died after the CASA C-212 twin-engine turboprop aircraft went down near the border with the Dominican Republic, about 30 miles from the capital, Port-au-Prince.
The plane plunged into an isolated mountainside near the farming town of Peyi Mouri, meaning "dead country" in Haitian Creole.
Two UN helicopters were able to land near the site and peacekeepers began the process of returning the bodies to Port-au-Prince.
