Gun summit plan backed

CAMPAIGNERS calling for tougher controls on firearms have welcomed Scottish Government plans to host a special summit on gun laws.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill yesterday met Dr Mick North, whose daughter Sophie was killed in the Dunblane massacre, and Andy Morton and Sharon McMillan, who have been campaigning for a ban on airguns since the death of their two-year-old son Andrew.

Mr MacAskill spoke to them about his plans for a summit to examine how firearms legislation, including the law on airguns, could be reformed.

With laws in this area currently reserved to Westminster, the Justice Secretary has written to Home Secretary Jacqui Smith asking her to jointly host the event.
