Greens' pledge on services

THE Scottish Greens want to impose a tax hike in what is a central plank of the party's manifesto being launched today.

Under the plans 0.5p would be added onto the Scottish variable rate of tax from 2013, which the Greens say would mean someone earning 20,000 would pay an additional 1.20 a week.

Green Glasgow candidate and party co-leader Patrick Harvie claimed the tax increase was needed to protect public services. Speaking ahead of the manifesto launch in Edinburgh, he said: "No-one wants to raise taxes, but neither do Scots want to see vital public services go to the wall."

Meanwhile, former Green MSP Robin Harper yesterday visited north east in support of the party's top candidate in the region, Martin Ford.

Mr Harper and Mr Ford visited "The Bunker", the acre in the middle of the Menie estate jointly owned by Mr Harper and 62 others that was part of a campaign against compulsory purchase of residents' homes for tycoon Donald Trump's planned golf resort.
