Greater freedom of information on the cards

THE Scottish Government is giving "serious thought" to extending Freedom of Information legislation, it was revealed yesterday.

Bruce Crawford, the Parliamentary business minister, proposes to extend the law to cover more organisations.

That could see social landlords come under the scope of Freedom of Information (FOI) legislation, as well as local authority trusts and bodies set up by councils and contractors who provide services that are a function of a public authority.

However, Mr Crawford stressed a final decision would only be taken after consultation with the organisations potentially involved and other interested bodies.

He said: "I believe it is right to give thought to extending FOI coverage in Scotland."
