Great-gran's op to restore vision has changed her life

A GREAT-grandmother says her life has been transformed by a pioneering transplant operation to restore her sight.

Jean Black, 69, can now see her great grandchildren clearly after surgery.

She became one of the first people in Scotland to undergo a new type of corneal transplant operation. The procedure involved replacing only the diseased section of the cornea – the curved "window" at the front of the eye – and needs fewer stitches.

Ms Black, from Prestonpans, East Lothian, was able to see within days of the operation at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion Edinburgh.

She said: "I couldn't believe it when I realised I could see everything so clearly. It has changed my life completely.

"I was over the moon when I saw my great-grandchildren properly for the first time. It means the world to me."

Mrs Black has the genetic eye condition Fuchs Dystrophy and had lost most of her vision by the time she was in her 30s.
