Grassmarket residents in call for root and branch review of tree plans

THE multi-million pound Grassmarket revamp is facing delays amid a continuing row over the loss of five trees.

The city council wants to remove the poplars and replace them with large oak and lime trees as part of the project.

Experts have found that there is some decay in the trees and they could only last a few more years.

But the work has been put back by at least three weeks after dozens of residents protested against the move. Around 60 attended a meeting this week and the council is planning a further meeting next week.

The delay has angered many traders, who say they are losing money due to the constant roadworks in the area. They are anxious work is completed before December, so they can have a successful Christmas period.

The 5 million project is still expected to be finished by the end of November, although there is not yet a set finishing date.

The city council has already ordered the large replacement trees from Germany, but these have been put on hold.

A spokeswoman said: "We're consulting with residents and traders regarding the trees and listening to their views, but ultimately the decision lies with us. As soon as a decision is made, the new trees can be transported within a week.

"So far, suspending the tree work has delayed the project by about three weeks."

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: "I think a lot of people are unhappy as they feel they weren't asked their opinion. People are very attached to the trees, and they give the area a lot of character."

But many traders in the area are worried that the delay is costing more money. They believe it makes sense to replace the trees while the other work is under way, as they are nearing the end of their natural life span.

Bill Cowan, who runs Costume HaHa, said: "There's tremendous resistance from some of the residents. It's all got very emotional.

"We could be left in the unfortunate situation that, ten or 15 years down the line, there might not be any trees. At the end of the day, everyone wants trees."

Matt Dale, of Mr Wood's Fossils, said: "We're keen to see the work done as soon as possible. The hold-up is costing a great deal of money. The majority view is to replace the trees now when there is already upheaval, rather than wait for five or ten years.

"I can understand people's attachment to the trees, but it's important it gets done by December. Most of the traders can't afford any prolongation of the work."
