Grant for new research into Alzheimer's
SCIENTISTS at a city university have been awarded a grant to investigate the causes of a common form of dementia.
The two professors at Edinburgh University have been given 30,000 to study what triggers Alzheimer's disease.
Profs Jean Manson and Richard Morris will look at two proteins which, previous work shows, could be involved in causing the onset of the disease.
Prof Manson said: "We recently found that the prion protein regulates the amount of amyloid in the brain. We want to find out more about the link between these two proteins and find out if a decrease in prion protein can cause Alzheimer's.
"By understanding the causes of Alzheimer's, we hope to pave the way for developing new treatments for the disease."
The money for the project was put up by the Alzheimer's Research Trust.
