GPs slated over cancer

A LACK of knowledge and scepticism amongst some GPs prevent men in Edinburgh from receiving a prostate cancer check, a charity has said.

The Prostate Cancer Charity said the PSA test - known as "the first line of defence" against the disease - was not being offered as widely as it should be.

To make matters worse, the organisation said, the majority of men themselves were unaware of the simple test, despite wide-ranging public discussion about the killer disease.

Chief executive John Neate said: "We know that the PSA test can play an important role for some men in identifying aggressive prostate cancers at a stage. "GPs must begin to engage men much more pro-actively."
