Glasgow bans quangos from making political donations
GLASGOW City Council has banned its arm's-length firms from giving public money to political parties after Scotland on Sunday revealed one had ploughed thousands into Labour coffers.
We revealed that City Building, a construction quango set up by its former leader Steven Purcell, took a 2,000 table at a Labour Party fundraising dinner in 2009 and today we reveal it also took a 2,000 table at a further Labour fund-raising dinner earlier this year.
Party officials can face jail for taking donations from councils but not from such arm's length bodies.
Yesterday George Black, council chief executive, said all arm's-length organisations would be subject to the same rules as the authority itself.
