Girl, 8, in stable condition after road crash near home

AN EIGHT-year-old girl seriously injured in a road crash just a few metres from her home was today said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

Primary four pupil Melissa Zeybek had just left St Gabriel's RC Primary School in Prestonpans on Tuesday afternoon when she was struck by a car. It is understood the family home is just across the road from the school.

An East Lothian Council spokesman said everyone was wishing her a speedy recovery.

He said: "Everyone at St Gabriel's is very shocked about what has happened. Teachers are talking to pupils about it and providing support and comfort.

"The whole school is thinking about and praying for the little girl and her family, and hoping that she will be back amongst her friends soon."

The Evening News told yesterday how firefighters had to use special equipment to free the girl. She was rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and later transferred to the Sick Kids Hospital for specialist care.
