Gingrich to run for president
Newt Gingrich, who in the 1990s led the Republican Party to its first majority in the House of Representatives in 40 years, last night announced he will run for president of the United Sates.
The 67-year-old has some of the best name recognition in the wide-open race for the Republican nomination, but he also has many political liabilities, including his three marriages.
Any Republican could have a hard time defeating president Barack Obama in next year's election. Though the US economy is still weak, he is a strong campaigner and his approval ratings were boosted by last week's military mission that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
