George Grubb: Capital facing a bright future
Lean times will make Edinburgh a stronger city, says George Grubb
FOR most Scots, it is a time to reflect on the year gone past and a time to get together with friends and loved ones. There can be few places as magical as Edinburgh at Christmas time – the city glimmers with festive sparkle as we light up our homes and public spaces with decorations.
I recently attended the switching on of the lights at the Marie Curie Hospice in Fairmilehead. These lights bring comfort to people facing life's journey without the presence of those who have gone before.
At this time of year, it's important to take stock of what has gone before, and to consider the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
This year saw a number of key anniversaries celebrated. It was the 10th anniversary of devolution, the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth, the centenary of the Women's Suffrage Movement in Edinburgh and, of course, the Year of Homecoming, held in the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns' birth.
There have been times of great sadness, too. Edinburgh still mourns the loss of the courageous firefighter Ewan Williamson, who gave his life in the service of this city. Our thoughts go out also to the families of the brave and dedicated soldiers from the 3rd Battalion The Rifles who have made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting in Afghanistan. Many Edinburgh-based members of the armed forces will be away from family at Christmas time. Although they are away, they will never be far from their loved ones' thoughts.
Edinburgh, like so many other cities, is weathering a difficult economic climate currently. Certainly the city has been through some difficult times before, but thanks to the strength and resilience of our people, we have come through stronger and fitter.
I would like to wish everyone in Edinburgh, resident or visitor, a very Merry Christmas and a happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year.
