General Election 2010 - George Galloway is a no-show as Westminster career is brought to a halt
VETERAN politician George Galloway was nowhere to be seen as his Westminster career faltered.
The former Labour MP was standing for the respect party in Poplar and Limehouse but finished a distant third behind Labour's Jim Fitzpatrick.
Mr Galloway, who won neighbouring Bethnal Green and Bow for Respect in 2005, did not appear at the count, prompting calls of "where is he?" from members of the audience.
Mr Fitzpatrick said: "The disrespect party has clearly suffered a huge defeat and that's another major positive from yesterday."
And in a pointed jibe at the Respect candidate, he added: "Thankfully we don't have to hear that dreadful open-topped bus driving around Tower Hamlets noisily anymore.
"I could claim that as my first achievement as your new Labour MP for Poplar and Limehouse – reduce noise pollution."
