Heriot’s 70-8 Selkirk: Smith happy as Heriot’s rout Selkirk

Selkirk found themselves on the wrong end of a hammering as Heriot’s put a dozen tries past them to rack up the BT Premiership’s highest score of the season.

“We didn’t have a good day at the office, but Heriot’s had a phenomenal day,” said Selkirk director of rugby Cameron Cochrane. “They did their homework on us a little better than the homework we did on them.”

Heriot’s coach Phil Smith said: “At some point somebody was always going to get a hammering from us when we finally managed to put all the pieces of the jigsaw together. That’s what happened here and it was particularly pleasing that we didn’t let up, playing right to the end.”

The signs of dominance were there to be seen early, as a reset scrum provided the platform for No 8 ­Struan Dewar to pick and go for the first try with less than five minutes played.

Selkirk just didn’t have the resources to cope with Heriot’s well-directed pace and power and couldn’t stop the avalanche of tries that was shared between forwards and backs as a steady flow of quick and quality ball fed Heriot’s hunger for points.

The two second rows Clark Smith and Russell Nimmo, and full-back John Semple, all claimed tries with less than half an hour gone.

Selkirk stand-off Rory Banks kicked the game’s only penalty in a futile attempt to turn the tide, but another try was notched up before half-time when winger Charlie Simpson scored.

One minute into the second half Semple got his second try, followed by touchdowns for openside flanker Ian Wilson and replacement centre Liam Steele.

Semple went in for his third try before Selkirk full-back Josh Welsh got a late consolation try. Normal service was quickly resumed, however, with another trio of unconverted Heriot’s tries from Simpson, Gregor McNeish and Nimmo.
