Game review: Shift 2: Unleashed
Shift 2: Unleashed £44.99, PC/PS3/Xbox 360
This sequel has dropped the Need For Speed title of its predecessor, and after a few minutes of play, it becomes clear why. Shift 2 is far removed from the crime and street racing of the other Need For Speed titles, instead focusing on professional street and circuit racing that covers a wide range of disciplines.
Drawing in cars from many of the world's biggest manufacturers, there is plenty for car aficionados to enjoy here, bolstered further by the often gruelling, but authentic driving mechanics. Getting a feel for how cars handle can prove daunting at first, but after a bit of practice you will be sticking to the racing line and claiming podiums with ease.
That said, Shift 2 isn't just about who comes first. Real progress comes by sticking rigidly to the racing line, mastering corners and pulling off clean overtaking manoeuvres. Fulfilling these criteria and placing on the podium will reward your driver with experience, which in turn unlocks new disciplines and events. While it may prove to be a car fan's dream, those less-versed with real car handling or more interested in arcade racers such as Burnout and Split/Second will likely be put off at the outset. This is a realistic, often tough challenge that will appeal to racing purists first and foremost.
